ABA is a science based on the principles of behavior that involves using techniques that have been empirically (experimentally) proven to modify behaviors. By assessing the relationship between a targeted behavior (behavior you want to change) and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior. Research in Applied Behavior Analysis ranges from behavioral intervention methods to basic research, which investigates the rules by which humans adapt and maintain behavior. All interventions used in our Behavior Intervention Plans are empirically based.
ABA-based interventions are best known for treating people with intellectual disabilities, most notably Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, Applied Behavior Analysis can be used with anyone to improve outcomes in many areas like business, classrooms, health and fitness, sports management, etc. ABA contributes to a full range of areas including: treating phobias, teaching new skills, reducing problem behaviors, increasing health and safety, modifying caregiving techniques, dealing with compulsive or repetitive behaviors, improving language and quality of life.
ABA Therapy for individuals with disabilities begins with an initial assessment. A thorough assessment is conducted to obtain information about the individual's circumstances, health, educational and behavioral history to help identify patterns of behavior that contribute to challenging behaviors or skill deficits.
After the assessment is complete, a detailed Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is developed which outlines the treatment to be provided by the Behavior Analyst, Registered Behavior Technician (if assigned) and Caregivers. The assessment, BIP development and insurance approval process can take 45-60 days. The Behavior Analyst provides training on the strategies in the BIP and collects and analyzes data to determine the effectiveness of treatment. Caregiver participation is crucial to the effectiveness of ABA Therapy, thus Seaside Behavior Services places great emphasis on empowering caregivers to help their loved ones succeed.
The number of prescribed therapy hours varies from person to person and is based on medical necessity determined from the assessment. For children, therapy hours can range from 6 to 40 hours per week. Our team will work with the caregivers to establish a therapy schedule that works for them and will produce the greatest outcomes possible.
